The brush doesn't get caught up in tangles, a good thing because that freaks out the older dog (a rather mellow German shepherd mix). Not that he'll sit patiently through the process, but he doesn't strain to escape, either, as he has with other brushes. The younger one, an Australian kelpie (never heard of it until I rescued her) totally loves being brushed. She'll stand at attention enjoying every moment. I don't know, she's spayed, but maybe this does it for her. Anyway, after three weeks of almost-daily use, their coats are noticeably thinner. They still are shedding, so it's no cure-all. It just didn't live up to the hype for me.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but so far, the furminator has not lived up to its miracle-tool billing. Yes, it removes some hair, but on our thick-haired newfoundland it is quite difficult to use. On a breed like this, if you have put in the amount prep-work (washing, pre-brushing with other tools) to get the furminator to work, there's not a whole lot left to do.

Our dog spends a great deal of time playing outside and as-such tends to collect misc. things in her hair. She's not a yard dog, and she's anything but neglected. A tool that's third in line behind two or three other combs/brushes simply isn't of much use to us.

I think there is a little less hair around my house. I did not get the bag full of fur like everyone else got. But I got a good amount of fur off of my cat. This product works but beware the finicky cat. I have three cats and only one will let me use this product on her. The other two literally hiss and bite at me when I bring the comb any where near them. I suppose I should have seen this coming because the two that hate the FURminator also hate being brushed by a regular brush.

However, if you have a cat that loves to be brushed and sheds a lot, this is a great product. It really does remove bags of fur and she's softer than when I brush her with a regular brush. Her coat looks really healthy as well. Her fur isn't all over the couch anymore.

My husband who is allergic to cat hair hasn't noticed a discernible difference in his allergen sensitivity in the two months that I have owned this brush. I brush her at least every other day if not more. I first heard about and read the glowing reviews on the Furminator here at Amazon, so I decided to give it a try. It was so amazing, I purchased another for the cats that live with my husband.

Man, when i first got this thing I was blown away.. I mean, look at the piles of hair I got off my four cats and my dog. Amazing, right? NO. My cat's coats look different, kind of like a man who's hair is thinning. Not only do their coats look less healthy, but not one of my 5 animals enjoyed it at all. If you have a shorthaired cat and are always wondering "jeez, why are you so darn fuzzy?", I would recommend this tool. I bought this for a technically "shorthaired" cat that sheds constantly, and profusely in spring. I really appreciate the way it collects fur like a magnet without simply dispersing it to other areas of the cat and/or environment. My furball really enjoys being brushed, but he did not seem to enjoy this tool as much as his normal brush, so now I brush with furminator first and then his normal brush just as a pleasant follow up. He doesn't seem to mind it, but it is not his fav. The furminator is heavy and sharper than a normal brush, so I would use it with a soft touch and not excessively, especially on the same area. $20 seems a little much but I'm glad that I have it.

Negatives: the furminator also comes with a printed warning that it should not be used on "nonshedding" cats. I don't know what a "nonshedding" cat is, but I would assume that if your cat doesn't shed, you wouldn't be looking at this item in the first place. Also, this one (blue) is "small" - it works well on my cats but I would assume that it is way too small for any but cat-sized or smaller dogs. You will be getting quite a workout if you used this on an Irish Setter, e.g. Also, passing on some hearsay from a friend of mine with truly "longhaired" cats, apparently there are undercoat tools with various sized teeth or tines, and that this size is to shallow to reach the undercoat of bona fide longhaired cats. I have a mix breed dog and the Labrador portion of her means she sheds year round, especially her light colored undercoat. I've always used a rake type brush followed by a boar bristle brush. The problem with the rake is that I need to do it outdoors because fur flies everywhere. I had seen the Furminator and thought it was just hype. Then last week, my niece's fiancee had one of the tools sitting around for his Rottweiler. I decided to try it on my dog and was amazed at how much undercoat was removed and how contained it was. What amazes me is that my dog will lie down and let me use this on her for up to 1/2 hour without complaint. You just have to go gentle on the breast and on the hindquarters. Her coat looks great after and it seems to take a lot less time. On my first complete grooming, I had an entire kitchen wastecan full of her hair. Spread out it would be ever bit as convincing as the advertisement.

I do think the tool is a little pricey but it's made really well. I started to get the imitation device some have mentioned but sprung for the real one. I was THRILLED to see all that hair and know that it would NOT make it to more corners or under my bookshelf! It was gone forever.

I also have a very short-haired mastiff mix. I COULDN'T BELIEVE how much hair came off of HIS coat!! Even a very short-haired dog has a lot of extra fluff taken off and put in the trash rather than spread around our home. THAT really made me a believer - to see a dog that wouldn't seem to shed much give up so much loose hair.

I recommend being extra gentle when starting to use this tool - and particularly with short haired dogs. It is metal and could scrape the skin if pressed to firmly. My dogs let me know gently when I'd gotten a little too firm. As soon as I lightened up a little, they seemed quite content to be loved and groomed with this brush.

Didn't believe it would really work. YES it does-both for my mutt (Irish Wolfhound Mix),which I thought it would, but surprisingly it worked great for my black lab who doesn't have a very thick coat.

As soon as this came in the mail my husband and I hunkered down on the porch with the kitty in one hand and this handy brush in the other. Omigod. This brush was used on our new malamute-mix dog, who has the heavy double-coat of the northern working breeds. Before it was used on him, every stroke of the hand over his coat let little puffs of soft white undercoat go flying into the air and onto our clothes. After a good brushing with the Furminator, in which two packed shopping bags of fur were removed, the shedding is VASTLY reduced, to a much more livable level.
I've had other double-coated dogs and used a variety of brushes and combs, grooming for an hour or so every few days in shedding season, taken bags of fur off the dogs, but still had fur come off while stroking the dog afterward. The Furminator seems different in that the fur quit shedding after the same amount of fur was removed, which is the partly the point of the grooming in the first place.
I don't own one of these yet but since dog hair blowing around the house in puffy scads is irritating, I plan to get one after a little price-shopping. I don't hate this product, because the less hair the better in general.

BUT BUT BUT!!! From what I can tell with use on my long-haired American Eskimo, the tool actually thins the hair, it doesn't just remove dead and/or undercoat. The tools' sharp edged "blade", the manufacturer actually calls it a blade, cuts out hair to thin it. So, yes, you get off mounds of hair, but it might be hair you want to keep on the dog...you know, for a nice looking coat. I will continue to use it sparingly (I think anyway), but only because my dog has a really thick coat and thinning isn't necessarily bad. JUST KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR'E THINNING/CUTTING good, bad, dead, live, over, under-coat, everything. After using it, you'll clearly see that your dog's coat isn't as fluffy and looks thinner, and it's not just because you removed dead and undercoat!

I've done nothing scientific, but that's what I think is happening with this tool.
